Synopsis

The pastor of the First Reformed Church in Snowbridge, New York, Ernst Toller, is going through a spiritual crisis. He begins the movie by recording his thoughts in a journal that he intends to keep for a year before destroying it.

The 250-year-old Dutch Reformed church served as an Underground Railroad stop in the past. The church has shifted away from its historical emphasis on Calvinist theology and is now primarily used as a tourist destination due to declining attendance. Former military chaplain Toller is battling alcoholism and the loss of his son Joseph, who was killed in the Iraq War.
